Clothing made of polyester proves to be one of the most affordable clothing materials, but you need to take care of this kind of clothes in order for them to remain in top shape. But does 100 percent polyester shrink? 

Polyester fabric resists shrinkage; however, it can shrink if washed with hot water, which is over 60 degrees Celsius. Drying polyester at higher temperatures also causes the fabric to shrink. Ironing with excessive heat can also cause polyester to shrink.

Are 100% Polyester Clothes Good?

However, this does not mean that 100% polyester cannot shrink because it can shrink if you wash it with hot water or dry it at very high temperatures. If you want your 100% polyester fabrics not to shrink then wash them in cold water and iron them at low temperatures only because high heat can cause shrinkage even though it resists shrinking by nature.

At What Temperature Does 100% Polyester Shrink?

While the melting point of polyester is 500 degrees Fahrenheit, the fiber itself will begin to shrink well before that. At 140 degrees Fahrenheit, most types of polyester will shrink about 3 percent and will continue to shrink until about 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to Shrink 100% Polyester

Soak the polyester in hot water for a while

Fill a bucket or sink with hot water. Place the polyester inside the bucket or sink and let it soak until it is totally submerged in the hot water. Let it soak for at least one hour. The longer it soaks, the more it will shrink.

Wash at hottest settings

When you wash, make sure to put them in the washer in the hottest setting possible. If there is only a warm setting available, choose that one instead of cold or cool. It has to be as hot as possible to have any effect on polyester fabric.

Hot drying

Dry the fabric using high heat. This will help shrink the fabric further and should make it noticeably smaller than before washing and drying it on high heat. If you’re feeling particularly bold, try doing this twice in a row to shrink it even more.

In hot Ironing

If there are specific areas that need more shrinking, iron them with a hot iron before drying in the dryer on high heat again. Iron polyester on the hottest setting possible. Use steam if you are able to or just press the item firmly with the iron until it is dry and smooth to touch.

Hang the garment

Hang polyester clothing near a radiator or other source of heat once it is dry, such as in front of a window on a sunny day or near an open fire, if you want to shrink it further.

Things to Know When Shrinking a Polyester

At this stage, you should be able to shrink your polyester. However, there are some key things that you need to keep in mind when shrinking your polyester.

It’s not advisable to directly expose the fabric to heat as it may get damaged. It’s better to use the warm water method together with heat from a dryer and ironing board.

Avoid stretching the fabric as you work on it especially after washing and drying. This is because the fabric might not return to its original size once stretched.

When working on a tightly woven polyester, it’s better if you use steam iron instead of hot iron so that you can protect the fabric from being damaged by heat.

How to Wash 100 Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fiber that’s strong and durable. It resists wrinkles, shrinking, and mildew. It’s also colorfast, so it won’t fade if you wash it in hot water or put it in the clothes dryer.

Care for polyester by washing it with cool water on your machine’s gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent, and don’t use chlorine bleach. If the label recommends tumble drying, choose low heat. Many polyester garments can be ironed in a low-heat setting, too.

Wash polyester in warm water using your machine’s normal cycle.

If the garment is white or very light-colored, you can use chlorine bleach as long as the fabric is at least 65 percent polyester. Add 1/2 cup of bleach to the washer when washing whites. If you’re washing colors, use oxygen bleach instead of chlorine bleach to avoid fading them.

Use liquid detergent with all types of fabric softener rather than powder detergent because powder detergent can stick to the fibers and make it difficult for water to penetrate during rinsing cycles.

Avoid using too much detergent when washing polyester.

Line dry polyester clothing whenever possible to avoid shrinking.
